Avocado

Avocado is a native fruit from Mexico or South America, nowadays widely cultivated and very popular in Brazil. Around 500 varieties of avocado are known, from three different origins: Guatemalan, Antillean and Mexican.

The edible part of the avocado is the green-yellow pulp with tender consistency   that wraps the big seed. It’s sugars and vitamins rich and has one of the highest protein content among the fruits.  The avocado was widely cultivated before the Spanish conquer, but became interesting to horticulturists only in the XIX century.  Avocado’s average weight is between 500 – 1500 g.

Avocados have the following characteristics:

  • High contents of  monounsaturated fats and oleic acid (the main component of olive oil).
  • Rich in potassium, manganese and B6 vitamin.
  • Low in carbohydrates.
  • High contents of E vitamin, an excellent natural antioxidant.
  • Helps on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
