We could say that there are around 70 varieties of lemon, like “Eureka” or “Lisboa”, lemon “Lunario”, “Galego”, “Tahiti”, Sicilian lemon, etc. It’s native to  the Asian Southeast. It was unknown for the antique Greeks and Romans, the first reference about lemon is found in the Nabathae about agriculture, dated on III or  IV centuries.

It was brought from Persia by the Arabic conquers, and so it was disseminated in Europe.

Centuries after, in 1742, lemons were used by the British Navy to combat scurvy. Only in 1928 the scientists found out the substance that cures the illness: C vitamin or “ascorbic acid”. Lemons contain approximately 500 ml. of C vitamin e 50 grams of citric acid per liter. Nowadays is one of the most popular and used fruits in the world.

It became popular in Brazil during  a pandemic influenza  called Spanish Flu (1918-1919), when it reached very high prices.

It has a lot of domestic applications: with the juice can be prepared sodas, ice creams, sauces, appetizers, medicines, syrups and cleaning products.

Some of the healthy benefits of lemons are:

  • High content of C vitamin.
  • Contains E and complex B vitamins, minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and manganese.
  • Helps to dissolve toxic substances in the bloodstream.
  • Helps to metabolize fats.
  • Enhances the immunological system by reinforcing the white corpuscle’s action.
